Lucid Cats: All Monsters and How to Survive Them

Lucid Cats has eight dream monsters, and each one is set off by something different. This page covers how every one of them hunts, how hard it hits and what to do when you meet it, plus how spawn chances climb over a solo run. Your lucidity is your health. Keep it above zero until the night ends at 6 AM.

The short version: Eyes and Flower Eye only move when nobody is watching them, so keep them in view. Smiley, Mask, Dance Cat and Ghost Cat react when you look at them, so don’t, unless you are ready to stand still for Smiley or dance in place for Dance Cat. Jaw hides beside doorways, so peek before you walk past one. The Listener hunts by sound, so when its head snaps, stop moving and stop talking.

All numbers on this page are from the September 2026 build. Later updates may change them.

Hit counts assume full lucidity and no lucidity upgrades.

Lucidity and getting knocked out

Lucidity starts at 100 and counts down to 0. It hardly drops by itself, so nearly all of your losses come from monster attacks. Lucidity upgrades in the shop cut the damage you take.

When it hits zero you fall out of the dream and spectate the other players. The monster that knocked you out then ignores everybody for 10 seconds, which is the window for your teammates to get clear.

What counts as looking at a monster

Several monsters care whether you are looking at them. The game decides you are when all three of these are true:

  • The monster is close to the middle of your screen.
  • No wall sits between you and it.
  • You are within roughly 8 meters of it, or 15 meters for Eyes and Flower Eye.

Seeing a monster from further away does not count. That cuts both ways: you can watch Mask from across a room without trouble, but you cannot hold Eyes still from too far off either.

Rules every monster follows

  • Doors do not stop them. They shove doors open as they move.
  • A monster needs a clear line to you before it can hit you.
  • Monsters leave after a while, but never while someone is looking at them.

The laptop’s enemy tracker

The enemy tracker on the laptop marks every monster as a red dot on the map. Use it to see where monsters are heading and to plan a route around the Listener.

Eyes

Eyes is a tier 1 monster that cannot move at all while anyone is looking at it, a player or a security camera.

Eyes, a cluster of six staring grey eyeballs of different sizes floating in the dark

As soon as nobody is watching, it rushes the nearest player, and nothing in the game is faster.

It always knows where the nearest player is, so hiding does nothing. It also never sets off the chase warning, which makes it easy to miss. The one mercy is the first time it finds you: it holds back at a distance and will not attack until you have seen it.

How to survive Eyes:

  • Once you spot it, keep it on screen and back away.
  • In co-op, one player looking at it freezes it for the whole team, so one person can stand guard while the rest get on with the night.
  • After about a minute and a half, it simply vanishes the next time the team looks away, with no attack.

Flower Eye

Flower Eye is a tier 1 monster that grows more common every night, until it is the one you meet most in a long run.

Flower Eye, a single large eyeball set in the middle of an orange flower

Everything in the Eyes section applies to it, with one difference. It moves a little slower, but it hits far faster: once it reaches you, full lucidity drains to zero in about 3 seconds.

How to survive Flower Eye: treat it exactly like Eyes, and never let it reach you, even briefly.

Smiley

Smiley is a tier 1 monster that wanders about doing no harm until you look at it. Do that and it pulls you into a staredown, with “Keep your eyes steady” on screen.

Smiley, a glowing yellow smiley face against a black background

You get a brief moment to settle. Next comes 5 seconds where you stay perfectly still and keep your eyes on it. Pass, and it wanders off and vanishes soon after. Fail, and it hunts you at a pace your sprint cannot match, landing hits until it has been unable to get at you for a while.

How to survive Smiley:

  • Once the message is up, take your hands off movement and hold your crosshair on its face.
  • To skip the staredown entirely, just don’t look at it.

The cooldown after a staredown is covered under Dance Cat.

Mask

Mask is a tier 1 monster that wanders and leaves you alone as long as you leave it alone. Look at it and it goes after whoever looked.

Mask, a blank white theatre-style face mask with narrow eyes

Turning away does not stop it at once: it keeps coming for a couple of seconds while it can still see you. Cameras do not count, so watching it on the laptop is safe.

How to survive Mask:

  • If it chases you, turn away and sprint. You outpace it for as long as your stamina lasts.
  • Get round a corner to cut its line of sight, which ends the chase immediately.

Jaw

Jaw is a tier 2 ambush monster. It chooses a doorway far from every player and waits just inside the room, pressed beside the door frame, for someone to walk past.

Jaw, a floating set of pink gums and white teeth with the mouth hanging open

Walk past its doorway and it lunges and bites almost instantly. That bite is the second hardest hit in the game, behind only the Listener. It bites only once per ambush, then heads off to another doorway. If nobody comes past for a while, it moves on by itself. Watching it, in person or on a camera, makes it vanish to some other doorway as soon as everyone stops looking.

How to survive Jaw:

  • Look into doorways from a distance before you walk past them, especially while running.
  • If you see it lurking, take another route.

Dance Cat

Dance Cat is a tier 2 monster that roams a far wider area than the others, so it tends to find you. Look at it and it starts a dance-off, with “DANCE!” on your screen.

Dance Cat, a grey cat-headed figure with hollow eyes in a red polka-dot shirt, with a disco ball hanging above it

There is a short grace period to get a dance going. After that, hold any dance for 5 seconds with your eyes on the cat. Moving cancels the dance, so stay on the spot. Passing and failing play out exactly as with Smiley. After any staredown or dance-off, pass or fail, neither Dance Cat nor Smiley can challenge you for about 30 seconds, so you can look at both freely during that time.

KeyWhat it does
BStart or stop dancing, using the dance you picked last
1 to 5Choose a dance and start it immediately

How to survive Dance Cat: hit a number key the instant the message shows, then hold still with the cat centred on screen. Ghost Cat looks very much like it, so check which cat you are facing before you start dancing.

Ghost Cat

Ghost Cat is a tier 3 stalker that looks a lot like Dance Cat but reacts in a completely different way. Once it spots you, it trails you silently a few meters behind, watching.

Ghost Cat, a grey cat-headed figure with hollow eyes in a blue checked shirt

It never attacks unless you look at it. If you do, it comes after you, and letting it reach you is the real danger, because its opening hit is almost immediate. A teammate who looks at it from close range becomes its new target instead.

How to survive Ghost Cat:

  • If you suspect it is trailing you, keep facing forward.
  • If you do look at it, walk away. It is slow, and getting far enough off or out of its sight for a moment ends the chase.
  • A security camera watching it stops the stalking, so a teammate on the laptop can shake it off you.

Listener

The Listener is a tier 3 monster that is blind and hunts purely by sound. Its strike deals 100 damage, a knockout from full lucidity unless you have lucidity upgrades.

The Listener, a dark red cube with a large ear on each side

It switches between three stages, and knowing which one it is in tells you how much time you have.

StageWhat it doesYour window
WanderingWalks around slowly. A noise, or getting very close to it even in silence, makes it stop and snap its head. The head snap is your warning
ListeningHas stopped after the head snap. Any noise you make within about 8 meters brings an extremely fast lunge.1 second to go still
InvestigatingHeard something far away and is walking towards it. Any noise within about 8 meters sets off the lunge immediately.None

Steady sounds like footsteps and speech only register once they have gone on for a split second. One-off noises such as a meow or taking a hit count instantly. Bumping into it gets you noticed however quiet you are, and a Listener that has just stopped can stop a second time with no head snap at all.

How far each noise carries:

NoiseRange
Standing stillSilent
WalkingOnly up close
DancingMedium
Getting hitMedium
SprintingFar
Voice chatVery far when shouting, much shorter when whispering
Meowing, loud objects such as the phone or pianoLoud and instant

Every range is halved through a wall.

How to survive the Listener:

  • When its head snaps, freeze. Stop moving and stop talking.
  • Walk rather than sprint anywhere near it.
  • It hears voice chat, so whisper or mute your mic.
  • Don’t meow near it and don’t pick up noisy objects.
  • Keep more than about 8 meters between you whenever you can.

How a night works

A night runs from 12 AM to 6 AM, roughly 7 minutes of real time. Nothing spawns before 1 AM. After that, new monsters arrive every hour up to 5 AM, so the back half of a night is the busy part. Monsters always appear in a room with no players in it.

Monsters are ranked into three danger tiers. Early nights are mostly tier 1, and tiers 2 and 3 get much more common the longer a run goes. You never face two of the same monster at once, and no more than 6 can be alive together. On the first few nights, monsters also leave sooner than the times in the quick reference.

Deadly combinations

Some pairs of monsters are far worse together, because the answer to one is the trigger for the other.

CombinationWhy it killsWhat to do
Eyes or Flower Eye + MaskOne needs to be watched, the other punishes watchingMask only reacts up close, while Eyes can be held from further out. Stand back and watch Eyes from there, and Mask will ignore you even if it is on screen.
Smiley + Eyes or Flower EyeA staredown keeps you facing Smiley, so Eyes behind you can move freelyIn co-op, have a teammate watch your back. Solo, don’t look at Smiley while Eyes or Flower Eye is around, so the staredown never starts.
Dance Cat + ListenerDancing is noisy, so winning the dance-off can bring the lungeDon’t look at Dance Cat at all when the Listener is nearby.
Any monster + ListenerTaking a hit is a one-off noise that sets the Listener off instantlyAvoid every other monster while the Listener is close. A small hit from one of them can trigger the Listener’s 100 damage lunge.
Mask + JawFleeing Mask through doorways leads straight into Jaw’s ambushCheck doorframes even while being chased.
