Drown in Yesterday's Sea: All 8 Clue Locations
Drown in Yesterday’s Sea has eight hidden clue items to find, a diving gear shop that wants a six digit code, and a Sea Spirit who asks four questions from a pool of twenty. The eight locations, the door code and all twenty answers are below, then the window size keys, the language setting and a crash worth knowing about.
Here is the whole set of clues, in the order the game gives them to you.
| # | Clue | Chapter | Area |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Letter | 1 | Xiamen University Siming Campus, outside |
| 2 | Notice | 1 | Baicheng Beach |
| 3 | Potion | 2 | Jimei School Village, park entrance |
| 4 | Locator | 2 | Baicheng Beach |
| 5 | Map | 3 | Huangcuo Beach 1 |
| 6 | Contract | 3 | Gulangyu, Gusheng Cave Boardwalk |
| 7 | ID Card | 3 | Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street |
| 8 | Tape | 4 | Hospital Ward, bathroom |
Nothing below touches the story. It is locations and answers only, so the most it gives away is which chapter each clue turns up in and which parts of the city you pass through on the way.
A few of the eight are sneaky, so each one gets its own section below with the exact place to stand.
Clue 1: The Letter
The Letter is outside the Xiamen University Siming Campus rather than anywhere inside it. Follow the pavement that runs along the front of the red campus building, on the far side of the iron railings and the hedge. The marker sits down at street level, beside a parked car.

Clue 2: The Notice
The Notice is on Baicheng Beach. Head away from the water, down towards the bottom-left of the screen. Two palm trees stand down that side, and the one you want is the small one right in the corner, not the taller one above it. The marker sits on that palm’s own fronds, with the Notice tucked in under the leaves against the trunk.

Clue 3: The Potion
The Potion is at the Jimei School Village park entrance. Cross to the pavement in front of the long ornamental gateway, the side of the road away from the waterfront railings. The marker is out on the paving beside the street lamp.

Clue 4: The Locator
The Locator sends you back to Baicheng Beach, but not to the same spot as before. The difference is sideways rather than further down the sand. Go to the taller palm standing near the bottom middle of the screen, well to the right of the one in the corner. The marker sits on its fronds. The bright yellow-green patch of grass right beside that palm is not the spot.

Clue 5: The Map
The Map is on Huangcuo Beach 1. Make for the red lighthouse standing on its own little headland. The marker is out on the open sand a short way to the right of the lighthouse, below the two rowing boats sitting offshore.

Clue 6: The Contract
The Contract is on the Gusheng Cave boardwalk at Gulangyu. Get onto the railed stone boardwalk and walk it to its right-hand end, past the cave mouth set into the rock face above you. The marker is waiting at the far end of the walkway.

Clue 7: The ID Card
The ID Card is on Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street, and it is not inside any of the shops. Stay out on the tiled street under the red lanterns and go to the leftmost of the big banyan trees in their round planters. The marker is at its base.

Clue 8: The Tape
The Tape is in the bathroom off the hospital ward rather than in the ward itself. Go through, and the marker is on the tiled floor between the toilet and the bathtub.

Diving Gear Shop Door Code
Trying the door of the diving gear shop tells you it has a combination lock on it. The code is 750630.

Sea Spirit’s Quiz Answers
The Sea Spirit asks four questions. Each of the four is drawn at random from a pool of five, so any single run shows you only four of the twenty below. A few of them lean on Chinese general knowledge. Common sense usually gets you the answer anyway. Where it does not, the option that stands out from the other three is usually the right one.
The first question is one of these five.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What kind of plant is the banana, botanically? | A herb |
| Which mineral pigments held the blue and green in Wang Ximeng’s A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains for a thousand years? | Malachite and azurite |
| Where is the driest desert on Earth outside the polar regions? | The Atacama Desert, in South America |
| Which of Shakespeare’s four great tragedies has an ordinary general as its lead instead of a royal? | Othello |
| Cutting an onion releases a gas. What does it form when it reaches your eyes? | Sulfuric acid |
The second question is one of these five.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| You are in a race and you have just passed the runner who was second. Where are you now? | Second place, because you inherit the position of whoever you pass |
| In Greek myth, who answered the Sphinx’s riddle correctly and shamed it into killing itself? | Oedipus |
| Which Japanese dish is traditionally slurped to thank the cook and show the food is good? | Ramen |
| What can be left behind after a massive star goes supernova? | A neutron star or a black hole |
| Which novel is the word Shangri-La from? | Lost Horizon |
The third question is one of these five.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Which bone in the human skeleton is the longest and hardest? | The femur, the thigh bone |
| Which element is second most common in the Earth’s crust? | Silicon, which comes after oxygen |
| Apples, pears and peaches all belong to which plant family? | Rosaceae |
| What is a Potemkin village? | A staged front put up to fool whoever is looking at it |
| Which of the listed birds cannot fly? | The ostrich |
The fourth question is one of these five.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Which of the options is not one of China’s Four Famous Embroideries? | Beijing embroidery |
| Which continent is the smallest? | Oceania |
| Which is the earliest anthology of Chinese poetry? | The Book of Songs |
| Which of the animals listed is not cold-blooded? | The penguin |
| Which tradition gave us ksana, the smallest possible unit of time? | Buddhism |
Questions That Differ in the Chinese Version
Two slots in that pool are not the same in every language. In English, the second question can be the supernova one and the third can be the Potemkin village one. Play in Chinese and each of those two slots holds a different question instead.
| Slot | Question | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| Second question | Which line follows “Tonight the moon is bright and everyone gazes at it”? | The line about who will find these autumn thoughts |
| Third question | The idiom 勾心斗角, gouxin-doujiao, now describes scheming and setting traps against one another. What did it originally refer to? | Architectural design |
All four options appear on screen in Chinese, so match them by sense rather than word for word.
Window Size and Fullscreen
Alt and Enter together toggle fullscreen. In windowed mode, F5, F6 and F7 set the window size, although at the time of writing that only works in the English version.
| Key | Window size |
|---|---|
| F5 | 1x |
| F6 | 2x |
| F7 | 3x |
Pressing the same key a second time switches the scaling between HQX and nearest neighbour, so you can pick between a smoothed picture and hard pixel edges.
The game’s own resize is better suited to pixel art than Windows scaling is. So on a high-DPI display, turn Windows scaling off for the game. Open the properties for Game.exe, go into the high DPI settings, set scaling to be performed by the application, then size the window with those keys.
Crashes When Minimised
At the time of writing the game can crash in rare cases when it is minimised or left running in the background. Save more often than you otherwise would.
How to Change the Language
Right-click the game in your Steam library, open Properties, and change the Language setting on the General tab.
